Palmerston Otago was established during a significant gold mining boom that took place in the 1860s. This historic town is strategically located at the junction of State Highway 1 and State Highway 85, which is known locally by the distinctive name "The Pigroot." This highway serves as the primary thoroughfare of the Maniototo region, connecting various communities and offering access to the surrounding scenic landscapes.
